Akintoye Segun-Shiigo

Akintoye Segun-Shigo is a Nigerian artist whose practice revolves around figuration and abstract expressionism. His works are not derived from the visible world and instead emphasise unrestricted, spontaneous and emotional expression by applying unbounded freedom of technique and execution.

Shiigo’s pieces abandon predictably structured composition and instead are guided by an experimentation with texture colour and composition existing in an amorphous space

He often times anchors with a coloured canvas textured with impulsive and often times heavy strokes overlaid with a web of interrelated pigments.

Shiigo’s Practice does just this: Defying the general trends of conventional art in the Nigerian art world. His art is highly influenced by forms, lines and colours. Shiigo’s works excogitate emotions, aesthetics, celebration and human displeasure with situation in the society.

He takes inspiration from his day-to-day; his muse, his walks around town, (studying) forms and colours, and the ample time spent with different people from all walks of life listening to their stories, combined with engaging with music, particularly particularly jazz and soul. These are the ingredients of his practice.
