Q: Tell us about your journey into art. How did it all begin?

Olajide:My name is Olajide Kuti, I was born in Lagos in October 1991, and from early childhood I found myself drawn to images from biblical scriptures. Those early fascinations slowly evolved into a true passion. My time at Yaba College of Technology helped crystallize it: I earned my OND in 2013 and HND in 2016 in Visual Arts. That was when I knew art was more than a calling—it was a lifelong path.

"My art is deeply rooted in the world around me,I find inspiration in everyday happenings, cultural experiences, and books also spark my creativity sometimes."

Q: How would you describe your artistic style?

Olajide: I work primarily in figurative expressionism . My paintings are emotionally charged and often explore human experiences, cultural realities, and socio-political themes. My subjects—especially women and children—reflect the beauty and the struggles of everyday life.

"My Artistic Journey has transformed through various stages, reflecting growth , exploration and self discovery. "

Q: What's your process like in the studio?

Olajide: I start with quick sketches in my sketchpad to capture my initial thoughts. Then I refine them using watercolors before scaling them up to canvas. I use acrylic paints , brushes, and palette knives to create texture and dimension. My pieces often feature vibrant backgrounds, floral patterns, and checkerboard motifs.

Q: Is there one piece that means the most to you?

Yes, Some of my art pieces are more than just creations, they're reflections of Unforgettable moments in my life. Each pieces tells a story, but "HOPE" holds a special place in my heart. I crafted it during a challenging time and it became a source of Comfort and solace for my Soul.

“You will never find yourself until you start.” That sentence stayed with me.

Q: Where do you draw inspiration from?

My environment has always been my greatest artistic influence.

Growing up on the streets of Lagos , I witnessed the resilience of its people amid economic, financial, and political challenges. The daily struggle to make ends meet and provide for one’s family is a vivid reality for many. These experiences have shaped my artistic vision, influencing the themes , titles , and techniques that define my work.

I also admire the works of Wole Lagunju (Nigeria) , whose blend of traditional Yoruba art and contemporary Western influences inspires me, especially through his use of flowers and vibrant, delicate colors .

What challenges have you face as an artist, and how did you overcome them?

My artistic journey has evolved through various stages of growth, exploration, and self-discovery .

Like many artists, I have faced challenges. One of the most significant was stepping away from my craft for over five years after graduation. During that time, I felt lost, unsure if I would ever return to my art. But one day, a powerful insight shifted my perspective. I told myself:
“You will never find yourself until you start.”
Embracing this truth reignited my passion for art—an awakening that has been the best decision I’ve ever made .

Today, my greatest joy comes from seeing my art resonate with people , sparking deep reflection and thought-provoking moments.

Q: What’s next for you?

Olajide: I’m looking forward to international exhibitions , biennales , and hopefully a solo show in the near future. I want my art to speak on global platforms—to connect with people across cultures.

Quick Fire:

  • Second career choice? Soldier.

  • Favourite palette? Feminine colours.

  • Best advice ever received? “Keep creating, no matter the situation.”
