Unveiling the Heritage Behind Bibianna's African-Inspired Designs
This is the story behind the design of Bibianna's candle range and the iconic Benin cat that has become an iconic visual representation of our brand. Our candle range captivates the senses with evocative scents but also celebrates the profound heritage and artistry of African culture. Each candle in our collection is adorned with intricate designs inspired by historical artefacts from the Benin Kingdom, each telling a unique story of royalty, wisdom, and the ancestral legacy of the Edo people
My awesome friend and talented artist and designer Rachel helped to bring these images into beautiful sketches and this became the imagery for Bibianna’s brand and its first product range in 2021, a collection of candles that celebrates a piece of Nigerian history and culture.
- The Benin Leopards Candle: Symbolising Royal Authority
The first candle features two majestic Benin leopards, known in the Edo language as Ẹkpẹn. In the art of Benin, the leopard, considered the king of the forest, is a profound symbol of authority and is often associated with the qualities of a ruler: courage, strength, ferocity, and wisdom. Historically, these magnificent creatures were hunted by elite warriors known as Iviekpen, enhancing their regal symbolism in Benin's culture.
The choice of Cinnamon and Orange for this candle evokes the vibrant energy and warmth of Africa. Cinnamon, historically traded through ancient routes that connected Africa with the rest of the world, complements the fiery spirit of the leopard. Orange adds a fresh, zesty note, reminiscent of the lush, fruit-bearing landscapes of West Africa, blending the essence of vitality and royalty.
- The Benin Queen Candle: A Legacy Cast in Bronze
The second design features the iconic Benin Queen, represented through a cylindrical bronze head of an oba or king. These heads were traditionally created to honour past monarchs, starting with a new oba's reign who would establish a shrine to his predecessor. The head, symbolising character and destiny, was a central piece in these shrines, surrounded by carved tusks and regalia that facilitated communication with ancestors.
Bergamot and Musk are fittingly chosen for their sublime and enduring qualities. Bergamot, though not native to Africa, resonates with the intricate trade relationships of the Benin Empire, which connected them with distant lands that might have brought such exotic citrus to their realm. Musk reflects the depth and endurance of the royal lineage, mirroring the lasting impact of the oba's rule and spiritual presence in the lives of the Edo people.
- The Benin Hip Mask Candle: Intricacy and Elegance
The third candle showcases the Benin Hip Mask, a pendant mask carved from ivory and adorned with a human face, European figures, and decorative lattice work. This mask was part of the royal regalia and worn during important ceremonies. The iron and copper alloy inlays signify the cultural and material exchanges that occurred through Benin's interactions with European traders.
The fragrance combination of Coconut and Lime brings a tropical, refreshing vibe that highlights the coastal influences on Benin's culture. Coconut palms are abundant in the region, representing nourishment and tropical abundance. Lime adds a burst of freshness, akin to the vibrant life force and creativity of the Edo people, enhancing the lively spirit captured in the hip mask's carvings.
