A young child with closed eyes floats peacefully among green lily pads in dark water, with gentle sunlight highlighting their face and the surrounding leaves.

Chiemezie Geraldine Ike

Chiemezie Gerald Ike's artwork explores themes of trauma, identity, and the socio-political realities of Nigeria and Africa. He draws inspiration from personal experiences, like academic bullying, shaming culture and broader issues like slavery, social inequality, and the influence of Western culture on African sovereignty.
• Ike uses mixed media, including paint, paper, textiles, and found objects, to express these themes. His work ranges from paintings and installations to "Plastograffito," a painting technique that mimics aging.
• Trauma plays a central role in his artistic process, serving as both inspiration and technique. He sees trauma as a "dialect" that shapes artistic expression. Ike's work examines how traumatic experiences, both individual and collective, impact identity and cultural understanding.
