A study of the commemorative bronze heads placed on royal ancestral altars in the Benin Kingdom. The cylindrical crown covered in dense coral beading, the five raised keloid scarification marks, and the massive layered coral collar are all faithfully rendered in this detailed stipple illustration. These bronzes were cast using the lost-wax technique and represent the pinnacle of West African metalworking. Each head honoured a deceased Oba, preserving his likeness for eternity. Printed and handmade in London. Part of the Bibianna Benin Kingdom Collection.
