The Okuyi mask of the Punu people of Gabon — one of the most serene and beautiful forms in all of African art. This illustration captures the elaborate braided coiffure with its central crest and side lobes, the diamond-shaped scarification marks on the forehead and cheeks, and the characteristic slit eyes and small pursed mouth that represent the peaceful expression of an ancestor spirit. The stippled upper forehead represents the red-ochre pigment applied to the original carved wood mask, contrasting with the smooth white kaolin-painted face below. Printed and handmade in London. Part of the Bibianna African Art Collection.
